Just One Thing Can Save a Life

Information

Simple actions every driver can take to make Reading’s roads safer for everyone.

Every day in Reading, small decisions behind the wheel make a big difference. Many of the most serious collisions happen not because someone intended harm, but because a driver didn’t see a cyclist, misjudged space or made a split‑second assumption. The good news is that just one small habit can prevent a life‑changing crash.

Below are five simple, evidence‑based actions every driver can take drawn from our campaign leaflet Just One Thing Can Save a Life, which you can download here.

1. Look Twice at Junctions

A huge number of serious collisions happen because a driver looked once, not twice.
A second glance can reveal a cyclist or pedestrian hidden in the first look.

Make it a habit: pause, breathe, look again.

2. Give Cyclists Space

When overtaking at up to 30mph, leave at least 1.5 metres and more at higher speeds or in bad weather.
Let cyclists take the primary position on narrow roads to prevent dangerous squeeze‑passing.

3. Slow to 20mph in Residential Areas

Lower speeds dramatically increase survival rates and give drivers more time to react.
Twenty isn’t just plenty – it’s life‑saving.

4. Never Overtake Before a Traffic Island

Pinch points are a major cause of crashes. Waiting a few seconds avoids forcing a cyclist into a narrowing gap.
If in doubt, hold back.

5. Check Your Left Mirror Before Turning Left

Left‑hook collisions are among the most severe. A conscious mirror check before turning prevents cutting across someone you didn’t realise was there.

PLUS The Dutch Reach: A Small Habit That Prevents ‘Dooring’

One of the simplest, most effective safety habits is the Dutch Reach – opening your car door with the hand furthest from it.
This rotates your body and naturally makes you look over your shoulder.
This small movement ensures you check for cyclists and pedestrians.

Why it works:
You automatically check your blind spot

  • It prevents ‘dooring’ collisions
  • It protects cyclists, pedestrians, mobility scooter users and children
  • It becomes automatic after a few uses

One Small Habit Can Save a Life

Safer streets need just small, conscious choices made by thousands of drivers every day. If everyone in Reading adopted even one of these habits, we would prevent countless injuries and near‑misses.

Join us in making Reading safer for everyone who walks, cycles, wheels or drives.
