How to Check Brake Function
Static check (recommended)
With the bike stationary, squeeze the front and rear brake levers firmly.
• The levers should feel firm (not pulling to the handlebar).
Front brake roll test (safer, controlled)
Roll the bike slowly forward (or gently have someone else hold/steady it), then squeeze the front brake.
• The bike should slow quickly.
• The wheel should be held (it may still skid if the bike is light or on an uneven surface, but it shouldn’t freely spin).
• Depending on the bike’s geometry, the rear wheel may lift.
• You may see front wheel skidding or rotation stopping; depends on speed, tyre grip, rider weight, surface, and brake strength.
• If the bike keeps rolling much more than expected, the brake needs adjustment, pad service, or (for hydraulic) bleeding/air removal.
Rear brake roll test
Same idea as the front brake except squeezing rear brake lever. Same results expected, except:
• The front wheel should not lift.
• You may see rear wheel skidding or rotation stopping; depends on speed, tyre grip, rider weight, surface, and brake strength.
Happy safer cycling.
