Shepherd Hill Accident

Letter to the Editor

Information

Dear Editor,

The tragic death of a cyclist following an accident on Shepherds Hill Roundabout on 29 August 2025 has deeply saddened our community.

As a cycling instructor and a father of two teenage children, he was not only a professional, but also a valuable member of the community who promoted a safe and active lifestyle. His loss is a stark reminder of the dangers cyclists face on our roads every day.

The Shepherds Hill Roundabout is a known point of concern for both cyclists and motorists. Its layout and high volume of traffic create a hazardous environment.

For too long, residents have been highlighting the need for safety improvements here, but it seems it takes a tragedy for our concerns to be truly heard.

The loss of this individual is a preventable tragedy. It is imperative that we, as a community, demand immediate action from Wokingham Borough Council and local authorities to make this roundabout, and other dangerous junctions, safe for everyone. This could involve a review of the road layout, better signage, clearer cycle paths, or speed reduction measures.

We must honour the memory of the deceased by ensuring that no other family has to endure a similar heartbreak.

I urge everyone to contact their local Councillors and call for a comprehen-sive safety review of the Shepherds Hill Roundabout. Let’s work together to make our roads safer for all.

Sincerely,

Peter Wheat
