Even if they are all electric vehicles, surely nobody wants to live in a world with even more cars on the road. The only healthy alternative is a Low Traffic Future with clean air and safer streets 🙂
This is why Low Traffic Future has launched the ‘Transport Choices Challenge‘ for local transport authorities.
Low Traffic Future wants our roads, streets and transport networks to be planned differently. We should be able to choose how we go about our daily lives. We can then decide whether to walk, wheel, cycle or use public or shared transport.
Reading’s Local Transport Plan (LTP), produced by Reading Borough Council, is a step in the right direction and includes a very positive target to:
“Reduce car use, from 25% of trips to or through Reading town centre, to 10% in 2040.”
But could we do more?
Roger Geffen MBE, a founding member of Low Traffic Future, is our guest speaker at the RCC AGM on the 16th October (7pm RISC Main Hall). Roger will outline the goals of the Transport Choices Challenge and how local authorities and mayors can get involved,
RCC supports schemes such as 20mph speed limits, school streets and low traffic neighbourhoods. Plus accessible and affordable public transport and shared transport schemes such as car-pooling.
Freight transport should be moved where possible onto freight trains. This can then be supported by improved shorter distance transport modes such as cargo-bikes in Oxford (https://www.velocitycc.co.uk/)
Join the discussion
You are invited to hear from Roger and have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session at the RCC AGM. We particularly encourage local Councillors, Transport Planners and other Campaign groups to join us.
