Our response to the consultation on Reading’s Draft Transport Strategy is here.
The draft strategy is a step change from its predecessors as it proposes demand management (charging). We are generally supportive of the policies within the strategy and the two standout comments we have are:
- The Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan must not be hostage to availability of central government funding, and revenue from demand management should be invested in infrastructure to encourage active travel.
- The proposed target to increase the number of people who regularly cycle from 5% now to 10% in 2036 is unambitious and indicates a lack of belief in the effectiveness of the policies for a sustainable transport system contained in the draft strategy.
