New Research: Pedestrians and cyclists spend more when shopping

Campaigns

A new report shows the correlation between walkable places and thriving businesses. Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking, recently launched its updated Pedestrian Pound report. The research shows that people who walk or wheel to do their shopping spend more money. Plus pedestrianised high streets see bigger sales.

The third and latest edition (2024) broadens the evidence base for improved walking and wheeling environments. These include the benefits of happier and healthier people, stronger communities and a more resilient environment.

Living Streets wants to see more cycling as well as walking. Both are green, clean and healthy ways of getting around. Pedestrians and cyclists share many common objectives. Both forms of transport have been marginalised at the expense of motor vehicles.

Chris Boardman, National Active Travel Commissioner, commented on the research report:

“I’m pleased this research backs up what makes sense – that designing streets with people in mind makes better, more prosperous places for all. This is why we will continue to invest to provide more healthier and greener active travel options across the country.”
