Woodley to Reading Active Travel Route

It has been confirmed that work is scheduled to start on the new Woodley to Reading cycle route on 26 January 2026 and will be completed within the year.

The initial work will be at the Palmer Park end and will work towards Woodley. This project was funded with Central Government Active Travel funding. More information at: https://www.wokingham.gov.uk/parking-and-transport/cycle-infrastructure/woodley-reading-active-travel-route

Woosehill Roundabout (A329) into Wokingham

Provisional planning has started to improve the busy Woosehill Roundabout, adding controlled crossings to those arms of the roundabout without provision, and improving cycle routes across the roundabout.

Approval for this is anticipated in December. It is hoped this will be the first part of larger walking and cycling improvements along the A329, for which further funding will be required.

Speed Limits

Following on from the changes on multiple routes in the borough, WoBC is in the process of adopting a new policy for setting speed limits. This includes proposals for town and village centres and residential areas to move to 20mph, and for a review of limits on single carriageway rural roads, including those with only a national speed limit.

Loddon Garden Village Development

A planning application has been submitted for a large part of the proposed Loddon Garden Village development on Reading University land between Arborfield, Shinfield and Sindlesham. The final development is expected to reach almost 4,000 houses.

Active travel considerations have been taken into account, and the site is intended to be permeable for easy walking and cycling. Having local facilities will reduce the need for residents to travel outside of the local area for their daily needs.

It is anticipated that principal new roads will be designed with segregated cycling routes and will connect to existing local cycle routes in Arborfield, Shinfield, Reading, Wokingham and Winnersh, although this is beyond the scope of the current application.

Earley Station Footbridge

The footbridge is due to have repairs carried out in the next few months. Keeping this important and well used Public Right of Way open and in good repair is vital for the communities in Earley and Woodley, as there are very few links over the railway line linking these two large centres of population.

The main work is due to take place later this year but may extend into early 2026.
